BIPoC Initiatives & Community Support in & around North Vancouver

Our ultimate goal is that the North Shore would be a safe learning space for all our Black students and staff. All implicit and explicit racism in the district needs to be taken seriously and responded to appropriately.

Below, is a list of Black led and guided, or supported initiatives where our Black community can include themselves and find supportive allies for the duration of their time in SD44.

Anti-racism within the School District Team

Valerie Jacober, together with a number of Black high school students, guides this group of students, parents, educators & principals. The idea of this group is to bring together members of our community who are actively engaged in the process of promoting anti-racism education and to make sure that collaborative decisions are only made under the leadership and with the approval of our Black community members.

School Counsellors Antiracism Initiative

Under the leadership of Desiree Bloom & Stephanie Hirose, a number of school counsellors & librarians in our district have come together to design their own series of discussion topics that can be presented to classrooms. As counsellors & librarians are allowed in to classrooms during the pandemic, teachers are encouraged to invite them in at any time throughout the year. Topics include race, ethnicity, nationality, stereotypes, implicit bias, and others.

Anti-Racism Steering Committee

In response to the lived experience of racialized students and staff in our school district, this committee has formed at the district level. The purpose is to help guide the decisions of our leadership to provide support, safer learning environments, and guidance for responses to racist incidents as and when they arise. This committee is made up of BIPoC students, staff and parents.
